How the conversion works

Tablespoons measure volume and grams measure weight, so the conversion depends on the density of the ingredient. Water is the easy case: one milliliter weighs one gram. Flour is lighter than water and honey is heavier.

To convert, divide the number of grams by the weight of one tablespoon. A US cup is 236.6 mL, 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a tablespoon?

It depends on the ingredient, because a tablespoon measures volume and a gram measures weight. A US tablespoon of water weighs 14.8 g, of all-purpose flour 7.5 g, and of granulated sugar 12.5 g.

Why does my recipe come out differently when I weigh?

Scooped flour can weigh 20–30% more than spooned and leveled flour. The weights here are for spooned and leveled cups, which is what most US recipe developers use.

Are these US or metric cups?

US customary cups of 236.6 mL. A metric cup (250 mL), used in Australia and Canada, holds about 6% more, so multiply these weights by 1.057.
