How the conversion works

Teaspoons measure volume and grams measure weight, so the conversion depends on the density of the ingredient. Water is the easy case: one milliliter weighs one gram. Flour is lighter than water and honey is heavier.

To convert, multiply the number of teaspoons by the weight of one teaspoon. A US cup is 236.6 mL, 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a teaspoon?

It depends on the ingredient, because a teaspoon measures volume and a gram measures weight. A US teaspoon of water weighs 4.94 g, of all-purpose flour 2.5 g, and of granulated sugar 4.17 g.

Why does my recipe come out differently when I weigh?

Scooped flour can weigh 20–30% more than spooned and leveled flour. The weights here are for spooned and leveled cups, which is what most US recipe developers use.

Are these US or metric cups?

US customary cups of 236.6 mL. A metric cup (250 mL), used in Australia and Canada, holds about 6% more, so multiply these weights by 1.057.
