About torque units
Torque is a force applied at a distance from a pivot. One foot-pound is about 1.356 N·m, and one N·m is about 0.738 ft·lb.
Check which unit a torque wrench is set to before tightening: inch-pounds are twelve times smaller than foot-pounds.

Torque unit definitions
- Newton-meter (N·m)
- A newton-meter is the SI unit of torque, one newton of force at one meter from the pivot. Torque specs outside the US use N·m.
- Foot-pound (ft·lb)
- A foot-pound (pound-foot) of torque is one pound-force at one foot from the pivot, about 1.356 N·m. US torque wrenches and engine specs use it.
- Inch-pound (in·lb)
- An inch-pound is one pound-force at one inch from the pivot, one twelfth of a foot-pound. Small fasteners are torqued in in·lb.
- Kilogram-force Meter (kgf·m)
- A kilogram-force meter is one kilogram-force at one meter, exactly 9.80665 N·m. Older Japanese and European specs use it.
